SUMMARY:Washington and Hamilton: The Great Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Knott\, professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College\, examines the most important collaboration in American history—the unlikely alliance between a wealthy Virginia planter and a brash immigrant from the Caribbean who went on to establish a “new order for the ages.” George Washington and Alexander Hamilton fought for the better part of twenty-five years to secure the American experiment in the face of bitter partisan opposition at home and determined enemies abroad. What makes Washington and Hamilton unique from other founding collaborations is that their bond was forged in the crucible of the Revolutionary War. This collaboration was vital to winning that war\, adopting the Constitution\, and creating the institutions necessary to secure liberty at home and respect abroad. \nThe unlikely partnership of George Washington and Alexander Hamilton\, and the brief Federalist moment they presided over\, allowed the United States to build the institutions that launched the nation on a path to becoming a superpower. If George Washington was the “indispensable man” of the American founding\, then Washington and Hamilton’s collaboration was the “indispensable alliance” that determined the outcome of the creation of the United States of America. \nThe lecture will last 45 minutes with time afterwards for questions.

SUMMARY:Photographs of the Construction of Anderson House
DESCRIPTION:Deputy Director and Curator Emily Schulz Parsons presents photographs of the construction of Anderson House. When the construction of Anderson House was completed in 1905\, the mansion was celebrated for its elegant design and expert craftsmanship. Anderson House was one of the largest and most lavish private homes built during the first decade of the twentieth century in Dupont Circle—the most fashionable neighborhood in Washington\, D.C.\, at the time. The mansion was also a technological achievement\, with a steel frame and modern conveniences on the interior including a central heat system and electricity. With forty-five thousand square feet over five floors\, it took three years to build the mansion\, along with its walled garden and three-story carriage house and stable. Boston-based architects Arthur Little and Herbert Browne designed this urban estate and relied upon the firm Connery & Wentworth to oversee construction. Dozens of photographs survive in the library collections documenting the construction of Anderson House\, revealing the materials and techniques used to build the structures\, faces of the workmen who raised the buildings\, and some of the surrounding neighborhood as it appeared in the early twentieth century. Most of the photographs were taken by Henry F. Withey\, a draftsman with Little and Browne who represented the architects on site and sent weekly progress photographs back to Boston.

SUMMARY:We Are Going to Be Lucky: A WWII Love Story in Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Fox joins us to discuss her new book We Are Going to Be Lucky: A WWII Love Story in Love Letters. \nWe Are Going to Be Lucky tells the story of a first-generation Jewish American couple separated by war\, captured in their own words. Lenny and Diana Miller were married just one year before America entered World War II and Lenny was sent off to train and fight. Deeply committed to social justice\, and bonded to one another by love\, both vowed to write to one another daily. As Lenny made his way through basic training in Mississippi to the beaches of Normandy and eventually to the Battle of the Bulge\, Diana struggled financially\, giving up her job as a machinist to become a mother. The couple’s extraordinary letters\, preserved in their entirety\, reveal and reflect the excruciating personal sacrifices endured by both soldiers at war and their young families back home. After decades of gathering dust\, the couples’ words have been carefully transcribed and thoughtfully edited and annotated by Elizabeth L. Fox\, Lenny and Diana’s daughter. \nElizabeth L. Fox has served for more than twenty years in a leadership role on the National Board of Hadassah\, where her responsibilities include writing\, training\, and public speaking. She has a BA in history from the City College of New York and an MA in vocational rehabilitation counseling from New York University. She lives in Boulder\, Colorado.
